Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how Pixel Color Wars works.

Gameplay Basics

How do I claim pixels?

Tap any pixel that borders your tribe's existing territory. Each tap registers as a vote on that pixel. Every 500 milliseconds a battle tick fires — whichever tribe accumulated the most votes on a contested pixel wins it and the pixel changes color.

You can only tap pixels adjacent to pixels you already own. You cannot jump across the map — your tribe must continuously hold connected territory.

What are shields and how do I use them?

Shields let you fortify pixels you already own. Tap one of your own pixels (instead of an adjacent enemy or blank pixel) to spend 1 shield and raise that pixel's fortification level.

A pixel's fortification level determines how many enemy votes are required to capture it:

  • Level 0 (unfortified): 1 vote to capture
  • Level 50: 51 votes to capture
  • Level 100 (max fort): 101 votes to capture

You start with 100 shields and earn more automatically as your tribe captures territory. Shields are server-authoritative — the count shown in the HUD is always accurate.

What are coins and what can I buy with them?

You earn coins by tapping blank or enemy-owned pixels. Tap the shop button (🛒) to spend them:

  • Extra Reinforcement — 15 coins: Your next 5 reinforcement taps cost 0 shields. Great for quickly fortifying a contested border without draining your shield supply.
  • Bomb — 40 coins: Click a target pixel to instantly claim all blank pixels within a 4-pixel radius. Excellent for securing hot zones or filling gaps in your territory.
  • Airstrike — 60 coins: Click anywhere on the map to claim all non-player pixels in a 2-pixel radius — even outside your fog of war. The only item that ignores fog.
  • Max Fort — 35 coins: Click one of your own pixels to instantly set its fortification to the maximum level (100), requiring 101 enemy votes to capture. Ideal for your capital or key border pixels.
  • AI Teammate — 75+ coins (Local mode only): Buy an additional AI ally who generates votes on your tribe's frontier every tick. Each subsequent teammate costs 25 more coins.

Bomb and Airstrike charges stack — buying the same item multiple times adds to your total. Charges appear in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

What are hot zones?

Hot zones are highlighted bonus areas visible on the game canvas. There are 6 active hot zones at any time, each shown with a distinctive glow.

When your tribe captures a pixel inside a hot zone, it auto-claims a splash of nearby blank pixels for your tribe instantly — giving you a significant territory bonus.

Hot zones rotate every 60 seconds (120 battle ticks). A warning banner appears ~7.5 seconds before they move so you can reposition. Controlling hot zones is one of the most effective ways to accelerate your tribe's expansion.

What is a capital pixel and why does it matter?

Each of the 8 tribes has a capital pixel — a designated anchor point shown with a crown icon on the map. Capitals are special in two ways:

  • They always require exactly 5 votes to capture, regardless of fortification level. You cannot max-fort a capital to make it harder.
  • When a capital falls, all players receive a notification. It's a major strategic signal.

Losing your capital doesn't eliminate your tribe — you can reclaim it. But losing it is a significant morale and strategic blow. Defending your capital should be a top priority.

What is fog of war?

In Pixel Color Wars, you can only see pixels within a 12-pixel radius of your tribe's territory. Everything beyond that range is darkened by fog.

Use the minimap in the bottom-right corner to get a full overview of the battlefield and track where other tribes are expanding, even in areas you can't see directly.

The Airstrike item uniquely ignores fog of war — you can target any pixel on the full 600×400 map with it, making it valuable for long-range strikes against enemy positions you can't see. The Bomb, by contrast, is limited to your visible range.

Game Modes

What is the difference between Local vs AI and Online Multiplayer?

Local vs AI runs entirely in your browser. No server connection is needed after the page loads. You fight 7 AI tribes, each with a distinct combat personality:

  • The Scorched — aggressive attacker
  • The Deep Tide — expansive spreader
  • The Mossworn — patient defender
  • The Gilded — balanced tactician
  • The Duskborn — focused attacker
  • The Ironclad — heavy fortifier
  • The Emberfall — high-output attacker
  • The Frostkin — calculated strategist

Your game state (grid, fort levels, tribe counts) saves automatically to your browser's IndexedDB storage every 15 seconds and persists across sessions.

Online Multiplayer connects you to a shared live map with real players from around the world. All players share one persistent battlefield maintained by a globally deployed server. Battle ticks fire every 500ms for all connected players simultaneously.

How does a round end?

A round ends when one tribe controls all 240,000 pixels on the map. There is no time limit — the war continues until complete domination is achieved.

Once a winner is declared, the map resets to its initial state and all 8 tribes start fresh. You can switch tribes between rounds. In Local vs AI mode, a new round starts automatically after a short countdown. In Online mode, the map resets for all connected players.

Can I switch tribes mid-round?

Tribe switching is only allowed when the current round is over — during the win screen or reset phase. You cannot switch tribes while a round is actively in progress. This prevents players from abandoning a losing tribe to join the winning one mid-battle.

In Online mode, your new tribe choice takes effect at the start of the next round. In Local vs AI mode, switching tribe resets your progress for the current round.

Account and Progress

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play as a guest immediately — no sign-up required. Guest players have full access to all gameplay features including shop items, the full map, and all game modes.

Creating a free account adds these benefits:

  • Your taps, wins, and badges sync across devices
  • Your stats persist even if you clear your browser data
  • Your username appears on the leaderboard in Online mode
  • Shields are saved between sessions (guests start at 100 each visit)
What are badges and how do I earn them?

Badges are achievements that unlock as you reach milestones. They are tracked in your browser (and synced to your account if you're logged in). Categories include:

  • Combat: Earned by tapping large numbers of pixels (100, 1,000, 10,000, etc.)
  • Power: Earned by capturing power pixels (hot zone captures)
  • Victory: Earned by winning rounds (first win, triple win, etc.)
  • Strategy: Earned for high combo streaks, heavy reinforcement use, shop mastery
  • Legendary: Rare badges for extraordinary accomplishments

New badge unlocks appear as toast notifications during gameplay. Your full badge collection is viewable in the sidebar achievements panel.

Technical Questions

What browsers and devices does Pixel Color Wars support?

Pixel Color Wars runs in any modern web browser on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Recommended browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge (all recent versions). The game uses standard Web APIs (Canvas, WebSocket, IndexedDB, Web Audio) that are widely supported.

On mobile, the game is touch-optimized — tap to claim pixels, pinch to zoom, drag to pan. You can also install it as a Progressive Web App from your browser's share/install menu for a native-app-like experience with no app store required.

Does Local vs AI work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, Local vs AI runs entirely in your browser with no network connection needed. The full game engine, AI logic, and your save data are all stored locally. You can even play on an airplane with no Wi-Fi.

Online Multiplayer requires an active internet connection to connect to the shared game server.

Why does the game use ads?

Pixel Color Wars is free to play. Ads help cover the infrastructure costs of running the real-time multiplayer server (Cloudflare Workers and Durable Objects). Without ads, we would need to charge for the game or limit multiplayer access.

If you prefer an ad-free experience, you can purchase ad-free access in the shop. Local vs AI mode can also be played without ever seeing an ad if you prefer.
